Breasts
Modern meaning
Exposed breasts are rare in modern logos, usually only seen in mermaid logos or logos related to adult entertainment. Traditionally breasts were not associated with eroticism in the way they are today. They were considered symbols of motherhood, care, nurturing and protection associated with milk and with fertility.
Largely a taboo in logo design today. An earlier version of the Starbucks logo featured a bare-breasted mermaid. Later editions were made more socially acceptable by covering the breasts with hair and removing much of the detail found in the original. Though arguably an improvement over the old logo, the covering of her breasts indicate a change in what is socially acceptable - which in turn indicates a change in the symbolism from motherhood to eroticism rather than higher moral standards.
