Modern meaning
As with many symbols, the arch has a more down-to-earth meaning today than in the past. In logos it often represents architecture, real estate, engineering and construction.
Positive symbolic associations include efficiency, strength, sturdiness and the ability to carry enormous weight. A possible drawback of arches in logo design is that the arch in itself is not a particularly interesting shape - as shown in our illustration to the left! In logos this can be remedied by using the arch in combination with other elements, for example pillars, company initials etc.
In earlier times the arch was considered a symbol of victory in different cultures, notably in Ancient Rome and in France.
